In 1978, Richie Beirach, Jack DeJohnette, and George Mraz recorded the trio album Elm in ECM Studios. Having discussed each of the tunes and their form beforehand, one track took a completely different course. Snow Leopard was that track. Guided by an unknown force, Richie, Jack, and George took that tune to new heights that was one of the most memorable in Richie’s recording career.

Here is Richie’s account of that take and his vivid description of its unfolding. Richie also provides guidance to other musicians on how to foster group improvisation that can bring about completely new levels of music and musicianship.

As a bonus, also included is the eBook by Richie called The Genius of Herbie, which explores from Richie’s perspective, what makes Herbie Hancock the genius he is.
