Richie Beirach Details the internal process of improvisation

In our book Framework for Jazz Mastery, the “Heart–Ear–Hand” concept explains the improvisational process. It starts with a feeling, from intuitive and emotional, then instantly travels to the ear, where it becomes a musical idea. From there, it moves to the hand, which executes it on the instrument. Though not scientific, this sequence reflects Richie's real experience.

Many players get stuck in technique and theory, which can stifle creativity. Richie explains how to internalize the knowledge, and then letting it recede so you’re free to respond musically in the moment. Like a top athlete, true artistry emerges when mechanics become instinct and the player’s unique voice rises unfiltered.
