Ron Carter about practicing to perfection

During our long interview, Ron Carter described a practice routine centered on precision and discipline, not flash or complexity. While working to regain his technique after time away from the bass, he focused on playing a simple C major scale eight times in a row perfectly. Any mistake, no matter how small, meant starting over from the beginning.

He shared this method with a student to illustrate the seriousness of consistent, focused practice, noting that this approach isn't just for bass players. Carter calls these exercises “skill-atus.” Not licks or lines, but tools to develop control, refine physical touch, and connect more deeply with the sound you hear.
