Here is another example of how a single chord harmony can be challenging. The reason is not just because there is little harmonic movement but also because later in this track, the organ is comping chromatically and freely away from the Bb7.
Listen for that opportunity to play chromatically, which really does allow you to play any of the 12 notes. Just aim to return to the key of Bb7 at a certain point sounding deliberate.
Instead of where “Common Tones” are, I’ve given you instead what I’m calling “Strong Tones”. These are good notes for starting and resolving phrases.
Even though the tempo of faster, you don’t need to constantly play fast. Notice the “Idea Starter” for this track begins and ends using half notes and quarter notes.
