A musical remembrance to a unforgettable Bahamian vacation

I returned home last week from two wonderful relaxing weeks in the Bahamas.

I brought back home with me not only a painful bout of COVID that began the day after landing, but more importantly, a collection of photographs, video, and drone footage documenting our once-in-a-lifetime Caribbean experience.

combined these assets into a 2 1/2 minute music video that captures the beauty and wonder of our stay on the Bahamian island of Eleuthera. I want to give credit to my fearless drone pilot, my son Cooper, who captured some great shots including the opening as he followed the bird flying out into the ocean.

We traveled anything but light through the three flights getting us there, but then midweek, driving our car to a boat to a golf cart to on foot finding the far northern tip of Eleuthera we captured the empty pristine pink beaches and clear turquoise waters of Harbour Island, drone equipment in tow!

In the end, it was totally worth the effort.

The music for the video featuring alto trombone was my arrangement of “Stranger in Paradise”. I guess “stranger” was a prevalent theme throughout the vacation, tying in my analysis of one of my vacation reads, Robert Heinlein’s great book, “Stranger in a Strange Land” to jazz improvisation. Read that blog post here.

Enjoy the video and feel free to comment and share!

  1. Great too see you playing again after COVID. I also contracted the bug after a Conference in Quebec City, Canada in late June. Hung up my guitar for about a week of tiredness but I don’t need my lungs for blowing on guitar !

The scenes of you playing in a paradise surrounding is truly inspirational. Thank you for sharing.

  2. Very nice! Beautiful place and photography…That beautiful pier you were standing on had plenty of room for me & my cornet—haha! I love your accompanying trac, too, but most of all, that beautiful trombone tone!
    Thank you

  3. Hey Mike – Sounds like a wonderful, fulfilling holiday. Good on ya, mate. Nice bone work on
Stranger in Paradise. It is amazing how tunes from all kinds of different genres become standard
fare in the jazz world – probably one of the strengths of the Art. Thanks so much for sharing.
    Cheers from Canada,
    Kent
