Phil Markowitz part 2 of 2

"If you really want to learn about reharmonization and chord substitutions, I suggest going right to the impressionists like Ravel."

In this second day of our conversation, Phil sat at his keyboard, talking and playing examples of his compositions and his harmonic thinking. As an example of a reharmonization, Phil dissected his version of the Beatles’ tune, And I Love Her

I wrote out the changes and voicings that Phil played as he went through the various stages of explaining how he does certain things. He also talked about chromatic playing and the book by Dave Liebman on which Phil played the audio tracks.

There’s a lot here to absorb so take your time watching this and perhaps go back for a second or third listen.
