Alan Chase

"I see music as an adventure. Play me something I've never heard before that makes me think differently."

As the chair of Berklee’s ear training department, Allan has a keen perception of jazz and its history. He has an extraordinary knowledge of a wide range of jazz styles, from classic jazz to the Avant-garde of Anthony Braxton and the Art Ensemble of Chicago.

We spoke on a wide range of topics including his insight on today’s students and their knowledge of music history, a comparison of some elite music schools, and his interesting perspective on music.
