Hearing Bob play trombone with the speed and accuracy of most saxophonists, it wouldn’t be far-fetched to be satisfied with playing like that. But Bob developed his amazing abilities precisely by never being satisfied with good enough.
As you might expect, we talked extensively about doodle tonguing, with Bob describing how he developed the technique almost as a shortcut in his early playing. He then went into great detail about its mechanics and the common challenges players have when first learning it, and how to overcome them.
His beautiful wife Calabria is a great singer, and we also spoke about her latest project to record Sinatra’s original arrangement of Lush Life.
