Dave Liebman live on finding one’s musical voice

"When you transcribe a solo at the high level I teach, you're going to know when that cat ate for breakfast and what he had for dinner. You're inside his psychi to see what is it that makes that sound individual."

While Dave and I were writing our book, The Art of Skill, we talked about a topic mentioned through the book, namely, what it means to find your authentic musical voice.

This is an important topic for improvisers of every level – beginner, intermediate, or advanced. In our conversation, Dave tells us of his decision to play soprano sax exclusively, how he evolved from imitating Coltrane’s 60s style, and some of the challenges of evolving into one’s own style.
