"Typical jazz education trains people in a way that doesn't prepare them to improvise because it focuses them to use the left side of the brain and visual processing."
Rodney is a psychologist who also sings and plays trombone, trumpet, sax, and piano. He reached out to me years ago after buying Trombone Improvisation Savvy, writing that he believed I am reinventing the way people are learning to improvise. A friendship thus ensued.
Through the years, Rodney has helped me refine my thoughts on the role of the brain in playing an instrument and improvising. Our interview expanded on this topic and included many others that will be of interest to musicians wanting to understand how to get better quicker by practicing in a way that accommodates the specific needs and nature of their brain.
This may sound like an esoteric topic, but in fact it lies at the core of reaching your potential as a musician and improviser. Listen to what this smart man says.
