Adam Nussbaum question

Adam mentioned that two of the people he played with early on were Chet Baker and Stan Getz. Neither of them knew about music theory and, as Richie Beirach has said, they barely read music. Is there an element of your playing and musicianship that could benefit from less focus on the technical aspects of music and the science behind it? That knowledge is not bad until it gets in the way of the music. Is there an aspect of your playing that could benefit from less focus or thinking about music theory and the technicalities of music?
